The Heart of An Indian Is Never Far From His Homeland
Today, there are over 20 million non-resident Indians (“NRI”) and people of Indian origins (“PIO”) who are non-citizens of India around the world. Residing in many parts of the world, many NRIs and PIOs have succeeded in their chosen fields and professions. From politics to business to fashion and entertainment, there is hardly any major country in the world that does not have an Indian community.
In the US, the NRIs and PIOs are amongst the highly educated and affluent ethnic group. The number of Indian-born students in American universities numbered around 84,000 in 2007-2008 while the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin boasts a membership of 35,000. In 2000, Fortune estimated the wealth generated by Indian Silicon Valley entrepreneurs at around US$250 billion¹.
Despite being far from their homeland, overseas Indians have always maintained strong social, emotional, cultural, spiritual and economic bond with their mother land. Socially, Bollywood movies have formed a binding element to their homeland and regarded as an essential part of their culture. In 2007, India topped the list in receiving the highest remittance of US$27 billion².
Thus, the heart of an Indian is never far from his homeland. The ability to communicate with loved ones and friends allow one to keep in touch and maintain ties with his or her heritage as an Indian.
MediaRing Talk’s latest promotion of just 4.5 US cents per minute to both fixed and mobile lines in India* offers overseas Indians to chat longer without a worry of incurring high IDD call charges.
